Some of the toughest jobs for a woodworker are the fine joinery jobs. Here are a few of the most challenging joinery jobs that require a lot of skill and good fine woodworking tools:

Dovetail joinery is the creation of dovetail joints, used for making corners in expensive pieces. For example decorative chests ans boxes or the drawers in fine furniture. They are the strongest joints in the profession and are also extremely beautiful joints.

Dowel joinery uses wooden pegs a couple of inches in length, which is inserted in to a  hole drilled in the end of one of the board to be joined, where it is glued in place. You then drill a hole in the other piece of wood to be joined, and that hole is glued before inserting it over the end of the peg in the other piece. Over time this is not the strongest of joints.

Buscuit joinery is similar to dowel joinery but used small oval pieces of wood instead of pegs. You need a buscuit joiner to do this, a specialized power tool. It is a fast and cheap form of joinery, and slightly stronger over time than dowel joinery.

And of course mortise and tenon joints are the mark of an expert woodworker. These joints can be used for furniture parts and timber framing. The mortise is a square hole drilled in one piece of wood and finished with chisels. A square peg – the tenon – created with the used of chisels, is inserted into the mortise hole.

My grandfather has a LOT of these types of tools. I always thought he was a “quirky” collector until one day when I watched him use them to make a cradle for my niece. Wow! What an artform!
